The Brescia Men's Basketball team hit the road once again on Sunday afternoon as they re-entered KIAC play with a game at IU-Kokomo. The homestanding Cougars came out hot, sinking their first three shots before Brescia settled in on the defensive end. After a back and forth first half that saw multiple lead changes, the Bearcats went to the locker room leading by the slimmest of margins, 31-30. Brescia only shot 43.5% from the floor in the first half, but held the Cougars to 38.5%.
In the second half, IU-Kokomo again came out blazing hot, quickly retaking the lead from Brescia by hitting three straight three-pointers to open the half. The Cougars extended their lead to 9 points (51-42) at the under 12:00 media timeout, and increased it to as much as 15 on multiple occasions. The score still sat at a 15-point margin in favor of IUK, 63-48, at the under 6:00 media timeout. However, something clicked for the Bearcats at that point and they would finish regulation on a 17-2 run, tying the game at 65-65 on two Kyle Nixon free throws with 34.9 seconds remaining off of a flagrant one foul. The Bearcats missed a three-pointer for the win at the end of regulation and the two teams headed to overtime.
In the extra period, Brescia struck first, taking a 67-65 lead on an Ed Carter layup to start overtime. Back-to-back scores from IUK gave them the lead, but it would prove short-lived as Brescia tied the game at 72-72 with 1:16 to play on a Tavon Johnson steal and old-fashioned three-point play. After a crucial defensive stop, the Bearcats took the lead for the final time on a three-pointer from the top of the key by Kyle Nixon with 42.7 seconds remaining. After a Kokomo score, Brescia converted their free throws down the stretch to push the lead out to six points at 80-74 before IUK's Jerome Campbell sunk a three-pointer with 2.1 seconds left. On the ensuing inbounds play, the Bearcats got the ball to Dillon Geralds who was able to run out the clock before the Cougars could extend the game with another foul and Brescia found themselves victorious by the final margin of 80-77.
For the game, IU-Kokomo was led by senior David Kelly with 25 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Trent Elliot with 17 points, Jerome Campbell with 12 points, and Christian Smith with 10 points. They shot 26-62 (41.9%) from the field and 11-23 (47.8%) from three-point range. The Bearcats were led by an incredible effort from senior captain Jermain Langley, who posted his first career triple-double with 18 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds. Fellow senior Kyle Nixon had 16 points of his own, followed by 14 points from Trey Howard, 12 from Ed Carter, and 9 from Dillon Geralds.
After a break for final exams, the Bearcats return to action when they host St. Catherine College in The Den on Thursday, December 17th at 6:00pm.
