Men's Basketball Travels to Rio Grande for a Cross Divisional Match Up
The Brescia University Men's Basketball team traveled to Rio Grande on Friday January 6th for a cross divisional match up. The Bearcats are 4-0 all-time against the Red Storm.
The Red Storm of Rio Grande jump out to an early lead of 16-11, But the Bearcats would stay in the fight keeping it close. With only 3:30 left in the first half the Bearcats would take the lead on a two-point shot in the paint by Trey Howard. The Bearcats would extend their lead to 9 by the end of the half. The Bearcats would shoot a blistering 62% from the floor and 42% from the arc. Brescia would also lead in rebounds 17-13. Rio Grande could keep it close in the first half by capitalizing off Brescia's 10 turnovers, turning them into 15 points. The Bearcats bench added 13 points in the first half to help Brescia secure the lead. "I told the guys at half that we have got to do better taking care of the ball" ((Coach Skortz)
The Bearcats were lead in scoring the first have by Trey Howard with 14. He shot 66% from the floor and was 1-4 from the three-point line. Dillion Geralds lead the Bearcats with 6 rebounds. Norman Ellis lead the team with 6 assists.
The second half began with the Red Storm pulling within 6 early in the half but the Bearcats would hold off the charge with a three-point shot by Dillion Geralds to extend the lead back to 9. At the first team timeout (URG) the bearcats lead 54-48. With a three-point shot made by Tavon Howard the Bearcats would increase the lead back to 9 at the first media time out of the half.
With four missed shot opportunities, the Bearcats finally get one to fall when Tristen Murray sinks a three pointer to increase the Bearcats lead to 10. (62-52). Tavon Johnson would add two more from the paint to increase the lead to 12. Rio Grande would answer with back to back three pointers of their own to get back to within 6 and then a defensive foul on Tavon Johnson allowed the Red Storm to go to the line and make both free throws to pull within 2 with just over 6 minutes left in the game.
At the last media timeout, the score was close at 64-62, with the Bearcats still in the lead. After the timeout, the Bearcats commit another foul sending the Red Storm back to the line. This allowed the Red Storm to pull within one. With a defensive rebound the Bearcats could convert on the other end to extend the lead to three. Another foul by the Bearcats allowed Rio Grande to close the lead back to one again. Trey Howard adds two for the Bearcats to regain the three-point lead. Then another three-point shot by Rio Grande and we are all tied at 74. Dillion Geralds would add two from the paint and then a costly turnover by the Red Storm would lead to the Bearcats taking a timeout. After the timeout Geralds missing from the floor but the Bearcats would get the offensive rebound and take another timeout.
After the timeout, Dillion, would add two to give the lead back to the Bearcats. After a Rio Grande turnover, Brescia would take another timeout. With the game on the line Rio Grande would make a turnover and then foul Kayode Daboiku sending him to the line for two shots. Kayode would make both free throws extending the lead to four. (78-74)
Brescia's Tavon Johnson commits a foul late in the game allowing Rio Grande to go to the line for a pair of free throws. The Red Strom convert both attempts and pull within two and takes a timeout. Another turnover by the Bearcats allows Rio Grande to advance the ball down court and make a shoot from the floor and gets fouled in the act. With the score tied the Red Storm go to the line and make one out of two and take the lead for the first time since the 4-minute mark in the first half. Down by one, Rio Grande fouls leading scorer Trey Howard and sends him to the line for two shots. Howard converts the first but misses the second and the game is tied at 79-79. Off the miss, Rio Grande would secure the rebound and drive the floor and make a last second shoot to win the game 81-79.
Brescia was lead in scoring by Trey Howard with 22 points also helping with the offensive was Geralds (18) and Daboiku (11). The Bearcats would shoot for 50% from the floor and only 61% from the free throw line. The Bearcats were out rebounded 40-28.
