The Brescia University Men's Basketball program on January 9th lost to Martin Methodist University giving them a record of 2-13 and 0-6 in the River States Conference at that time. Thoughts about the Bearcats qualifying for the conference tournament and hopes of post season play looked dim at best. But the Head Coach Brian Skortz and his young men's basketball team have never given into that thought. As the Bearcats enter the final week of conference play, the program has won 9 of its last 11 contests and have a chance to earn a playoff spot in the RSC Conference tournament with a win. Currently Brescia University sits in third place in the west division and has a chance to clinch a top four spot and qualify for the RSC Conference tournament that starts next week. "I have believed that we could compete in the RSC and make the conference tournament. When the preseason rankings came out and we were picked to finish 11th out of 13 league teams by the coaches poll, that was incentive enough to prove people wrong. It's been our character and how we have fought through adversity that has helped us turn around our season. We have grown so much and with how young we are it has taken some time, but it has also allowed us to create a winning culture that our team believes in. They are improving each and every day," stated Head Coach Brian Skortz. With only one Senior in Trey Howard others have had to step up and provide the leadership within the team to help turn the season around. "We never turned our backs on one another or got our heads down, we continued to get better and fight each day," stated Sophomore point guard Mason Roland. "Character has helped our team and me this year because we had a new coach and several new players so the season didn't start off the way we expected or hoped it to. It made us come together as a team and put egos aside for the betterment of the team to turn the season around." Junior guard Tavon Johnson adds.
"We talked about how important it was to keep working hard and not to turn on one another to commit ourselves to the team and get better each and every day. Their character has been challenged and they have responded in such a positive way. I am very proud on how they have competed as a team… and as a family. " added Coach Skortz. The Bearcats will head to Midway University on Thursday and to West Division Leader IU Southeast on Saturday. The Bearcats are led in scoring by Sophomore Dillon Geralds with 19ppg supported by Senior Trey Howard adding 14.8ppg and Johnson adding 13ppg. Freshman Kayode Daboiku is having a good start to his career as a Bearcat averaging 9.8ppg and recently being named three week ago the Conference Player of the Week for the RSC. "We have had a lot of different players contribute this year. We are a young team but we are a deep team which we have had to play a lot of different players with some of our injuries and sickness lately. They all have stepped up to help the team succeed. We have a huge challenge this week as we will continue to fight and compete hard to earn that playoff spot in the league tournament." Coach Skortz adds.
