OWENSBORO, KY – The Brescia University Men's soccer team is less than a week away from its first training session and just over three weeks away from its first regular season match. The Bearcats return a wealth of talent and experience for the 2017 campaign and have added depth to the roster with a solid recruiting class.
Head Coach Will Van Nostrand is extremely eager to begin training and expects to see the program continue their upward trend. The Bearcats have high expectations coming off a successful 2016 campaign and will once again set lofty goals with qualifying for the post season as the main objective.
Brescia will be led by its three seniors; defenders Edgar Estrada and Mateo Ruales, and forward Ricardo Majano (2x ALL-RSC). Together, the trio combined for 46 games started, 18 assists and 11 goals during the 2016 season.
The Brescia junior class consists of forwards Jean Laurent and Doodlyn Colas. Also, midfielders Kerby Edme (ALL-RSC) and Luan Yoshida. In the previous season, the four juniors combined for 40 games started, 19 goals and 13 assists.
The sophomore class for the Bearcats brings back forward Karim Ndoye, midfielders Davis Mitchell and Wenderson Petit, defender Landon Holt, and goalkeeper Max Wolf. In addition, goalkeeper Jacob Stanley (ALL-RSC) returns to the first team after redshirting during the previous year. The six sophomores combined for 52 games started, 10 goals and 5 assists in the 2016 campaign, and both goalkeepers combined for 4 clean sheets in their collegiate career.
Complementing the retuning players is a strong recruiting class. Forwards Milton Garcia and Kyle Bleidt, midfielders Marine Murillo, Fabian Torres and transfer Logan Miller, defenders Montrez Mason and Brandon Arellano, and goalkeeper Grant Jackson round out the 2017 recruiting class.
"We are returning a wealth of experience, especially in the attack, and we have a good incoming class to complement not only our needs but our strengths as well. I expect the boys to work extremely hard this season and to be competitive game in and game out. We will once again set high standards for ourselves, and I expect us to do everything in our power to reach our goals," stated Coach Van Nostrand
The Bearcats open with two home exhibitions vs Spalding University (NCAA DIII) and cross-town rival Kentucky Wesleyan College (NCAA DII). Their first regular season match will be on the road at Missouri Baptist before hosting Freed-Hardeman. They will then go on the road to Reinhardt University where they will face Truett-McConnell and Reinhardt College. They will then travel to Georgetown College before hosting Shawnee State.
