Brescia University Women's Volleyball team traveled to Chicago for the Robert Morris Eagles Invitational over the weekend. The Lady Bearcats would open the tournament against Graceland College Yellow Jackets. The Lady Bearcats would come up short in the match of the tournament losing a five set battle to the Yellow Jackets.
In the first set, the Lady Bearcats were unable to capitalize on a few Yellow Jackets errors. Brescia was leading 17-15 and the Yellow Jackets were able to put together a 10-4 run and take the first set. The second set began with the Lady Bearcats jumping out to a big led and never looking back. Brescia would win set two in a dominating fashion 25-10.
Things picked up again in the third, as Graceland and Brescia went point for point for the entire set. Both teams produced some big kills, as the game was back-and-forth. The Jackets forced key Bearcat errors at the end of the set, but were unable to overcome the hurdle. Brescia took the third 27-25.
With the Bearcats, leading the match 2-1, Graceland would rally late to squeak out the fourth 25-23 and tie the match up 2-2. "This was a great way to start the tournament; it had everything we needed to see how we would respond. Graceland is a great program." (Coach Forbes)
The score was close at the top of the fifth set. Graceland was able to pull ahead with kills from Sickels and Kneib. The Jackets finished strong, and stayed ahead for the rest of the set. Graceland claimed a 15-8 victory.
Outside hitter, Natalie Jones led the Lady Bearcats; Jones recorded 13 kills and 11 digs. In addition, helping the Lady Bearcats in the fight was junior middle hitter Katherine Porter who added 8 kills. Leading the team in dishes was junior setter April Buckner (20 assists).
The Bearcats fall to 2-3 on the season.
