OWENSBORO, KY – The Brescia University Men's Soccer team faced off vs Freed-Hardeman in their 2017 home opener at Kamuf Park on Tuesday evening. The Bearcats would strike first when Edgar Estrada (JR/Pomona, Califorina) would play in Ricardo Majano (SR/La Union, El Salvador), who was able to get in behind his defender and find the back of the net. The lead was short lived as Freed-Hardeman would respond just minutes later. Both teams would have chances, but the half would end 1-1.
Brescia would come out of halftime flying as Ricardo Majano would serve in a cross for Jean Laurent (JR/Port-au-Prince, Haiti) whose initial effort would be saved by the Freed-Hardeman goalkeeper, but Laurent would follow up his own shot putting away his own rebound. Then, just 10 minutes later, Brescia would win the ball in their attacking half, where Kyle Bleidt (FR/Cadiz, Kentucky) would find Ricardo Majano, whose effort would find the top corner from over 20 yards out to give Brescia a 3-1 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining in the match.
Freed-Hardeman would fight back to make the match 3-3 with 10 minutes remaining in the match. At the end of regulation, the match would be tied at 3-3 and in just the second match of the season, the Bearcats would find themselves in overtime. Brescia would win the toss and go forward and earn a corner kick. Ricardo Majano would swing in the corner where Jean Laurent would head the ball down inside the six-yard box where Fabian Torres (FR/Clay, Kentucky) would bury the ball in the back off the net off a first time finish to give Brescia the golden goal victory just 52 seconds into the first period of extra-time.
This was the fourth overtime match, dating back to last season and in all four matches, Brescia has came out winners off of a golden goal.
Head Coach Will Van Nostrand gave his thoughts on the match stating, "I'm very pleased to get the win tonight! I thought the first half was back and forth and that we really began to impose our will early in the second half, but all credit to Freed-Hardeman for battling back. For us, for these boys, overtime is where we shine. Great desire and great attitude from the boys, they are buzzing right now. Hard fought win, I'm very proud".
