Brescia University Volleyball hosted the Lady Oaks of Oakland City last night in the Moore Center. "We knew this was going to be a battle, we just played them in the Panther Invite six days ago and it was a five-set barn burner." (Coach Forbes)
This match up would live up to Coach Forbes expectations. The Lady Bearcats would start the first set finding themselves down 8-1. After a quick time out by Coach Forbes, the Lady Bearcats would come back out on the floor more focused and pull the match back to even. The set would go back and forth until finally Brescia would win the first set 25-23.
The second would see neither team able to stretch a lead larger than three points. With both teams battling back and forth the Lady Oaks would secure set two 26-24. "I told the ladies in the locker room that we just need to stay focused, this is going to be one of those matches that will define us." (Coach Forbes)
After the break, the Lady Oaks would start the third set with a 9-4 run, but Brescia would battle back to pull it close and get within two 20-18. After an Oakland City time out, the Lady Oaks would put together a 5-1 run and take set three 25-19.
The fourth set began with Oakland City taking a commanding lead, The Lady Oaks would have an 8-point lead late in the fourth 20-12, but the Lady Bearcats were not ready to end the fight. "The fourth set is one of those games that just builds character in a team. I was so proud of how we fought to stay in the match." (Coach Forbes) With two runs of 4-1 and 5-1, the Lady Bearcats would pull to within one. Both teams would not give up more than a two-point run until the Lady Bearcats were able to compose a 3-0 run to win the fourth set 35-33.
The fifth set began with the Lady Bearcats continuing the push and they jumped out to an 8-3 lead at the side change. But, the Lady Oaks would respond with a crashing run of their own and finish off the Lady Bearcats with a 12-1 spark and win the fifth set 15-9.
"I really let the team down in that fifth set. I always tell them that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results. I completely dropped the ball in the fifth set. I didn't make any adjustments and just left them out there on an island. I also tell the ladies that we must learn from our mistakes and that is what will allow us to grow as a team. I grew a lot as a coach last night and I am ready for the challenge, I also know that the team is ready. We had a great pre-conference schedule this year and I know they are ready to face the challenge that the River States Conference will give us." (Coach Forbes)
The Lady Bearcats were led by sophomore middle hitter Tonya Tivitt who produced 15 kills on 33 attempts with only three errors. She also had a career high 8 solo blocks. "Tonya had a break out match tonight. I am so excited for her because she has really been working hard." (Coach Forbes) Helping Tonya on the offensive side of things was Katherine Porter (13), Rhiannon Ungerer (11). Rhiannon would also lead the team defensively with 23 digs. Also, keeping the ball off the floor was Kristin Logsdon (19), and Cassidy Thielen (10).
The Lady Bearcats have their conference opener this Saturday in the Moore Center, first serve will be launched at 12:00 p.m.
