OWENSBORO KY – The Brescia University Men's Soccer team played host to the University of Rio Grande, who came into tonight's contest ranked at the #3 team in the nation. This was also the first River States Conference Match of the season for both teams.
Rio Grande got off the mark in the eighth minute to take the early 1-0 lead, but Brescia would respond almost immediately when just 2 minutes later Ricardo Majano was able to find Marin Murillo on the wing. Murillo would beat his defender and rip a shot from about 30 yards out that would beat the Rio keeper by dipping into the back post.
Rio would respond just eight minutes later to take the lead back at 2-1. Then in the 42nd minute Rio would earn a penalty and convert to add to their lead. They would go on to find a fourth goal with just 40 seconds left in the half to give themselves the 4-1 lead going into the break.
In the second half, Brescia would get a set piece at the 52 minute mark and serve it into the box, where Rio would win the initial ball, but it would fall to Ricardo Majano who's first time volley would find the top corner and cut the Rio lead to 4-2.
Both sides would battle hard for the remaining 38 minutes but the match would end at 4-2 in favor of Rio Grande. Brescia would fall to 3-7 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
"It's always tough to swallow a loss, but when you play host to the number 3 ranked team in the nation and play hard and fight for each other you can accept the outcome no matter the score. I think we showed a lot of character and grit and showed we can play with anyone when we play for each other. We will learn and grow from this match and I'm excited to see how we finish out the season" stated Head Coach Will Van Nostrand.
Brescia plays host to West Virginia Tech on Saturday at Kamuf Park. Kickoff is set for 3pm CST.
