Women's soccer coach Dave Donahue recently made a productive trip to Nashville when he signed McGavock High School midfielder Eva Burelos to a National Letter of Intent. Eva was a four year starter on the McGavock varsity leading her team to the district finals for the fourth year in a row. Eva finished the season with 11 assists and 13 goals from her center midfield position. She earned All District and All Region for two years and was the team MVP both her junior and senior years. Eva capped off her senior year and high school career by being selected as the district MVP in Nashville as well as McGavock's "Metro Female Athlete of the Year."
"I had a chance to see Eva play last fall and was impressed with her play on the field. I almost made a major mistake because I heard through the "coaches' grapevine" that Eva was being recruited by a number of bigger schools. But when I sat and talked with two of the McGavock coaches, Wynn (Hodge) and Joe (Schipani) in January, they recommended her highly and told me she had not made a college decision yet. Having known them both for years and taking their recommendation, I called her that night and worked with her to arrange a visit to campus. That was the beginning.
"I didn't realize Eva was such an accomplished tennis player too. She was a student of Faye's (Walker, girls' soccer and head tennis coach) for a couple of years and then a student aide later, so Faye knew her as a student, an aide, and an athlete both on the tennis court and the soccer field. Faye really sang her praises and said Eva's potential is unlimited. Eva is such a great student/athlete and person. She's just the kind of student who will contribute to Brescia, to her community, and to the country. Her warm personality and skill on the field will make her a great fit for our women's soccer program," Donahue continued.
Eva has also been involved in other activities. She played tennis for two years and was the number 2 player in the district for singles and this year was on the number 1 doubles team for the district. She was a member of Hispanic Achievers, FCA, National Honor Society, and will be graduate with Distinguished Honors.
Eva is the daughter of Maria and Jorge Burelos and they reside in Nashville, Tennessee.
