The 2014 Season will be Head Coach Aaron Biddle's fourth season in charge. With 8 returning starting position players and last year's four weekend starting pitchers returning, Biddle feels his team has a chance to have a big year. Coach Biddle said, "Last year was like the tale of two seasons where we started 18-17 and finished 5-17 in our last 22 games. Hopefully, with everyone we have returning guys will have a better understanding of what it takes to perform for an entire season."
After losing six seniors from a 23-34 squad the Bearcats have added a host of newcomers to this year's club to go along with the twenty returners from last year's club. The current roster sits at 48 players with six seniors, thirteen juniors, ten sophomores and nineteen freshman.
On the mound the Bearcats will be led by Seniors Jackson Miles and Andrew Shoulders along with Juniors Christian McHatton and Cody Morris who started 43 of the Bearcats 57 games last season. Other returners on the mound include Caleb McIntire, who was second on the club in appearances, Aaron King, Ryan Lutz and Chad Cox. Newcomers Taylor Garcia-Grisham, Matt Gunderson and Zach Sciaccotta are also expected to play large roles on this year's staff. "This pitching staff is by far the deepest I've ever had," says Biddle. "There is a ton of experience on this staff and a lot of guys that can pitch in multiple roles."
Offensively, the Bearcats will be led by Senior All-Conference Standouts Third Baseman Alex Hegge and Catcher/DH Hank Stewart. Hegge led the club for the second consecutive year in Batting Average (.378), while Stewart led last year's club in RBI's (39). Senior Shortstop Nate Crocker will also play a huge role for the Bearcats after leading last year's club in Runs (44), Hits (63), Doubles (17), and Homeruns (7). Other returners on offense include Senior Second Baseman Vin Barbato, Junior First Baseman Christian McHatton and Outfielder Cody Morris and Sophomore Outfielders Brady Reese and Nick Woltermann. Newcomers expected to see significant time include Infielder Chad Howard, Outfielder Daniel Lokesak and Utility Player Kenny McMurray. "With so many guys returning and some talented newcomers, we should be improved offensively this year," said Biddle. "I think we've got a good blend of some speed and some power. These guys should be fun to watch."
The Bearcats will open the 2014 season on February 14th at the University of the Cumberlands with a four game series before going to Bethel University (TN) for a doubleheader to open the year. The Bearcats will open up their home schedule on February 21st against Trinity Christian College. The 2014 KIAC Schedule opens up on March 14th at Asbury University and will include a road series at Berea College. Home conference series include Pre-Season #19 Point Park University, IU-Southeast and Alice Lloyd College. Other non-Conference opponents include #15 Lindsey Wilson College, Martin Methodist University, Huntington University, Campbellsville University, St. Catharine College, Mid-Continent University and the University of Cincinnati-Clermont.
