The Brescia baseball team opened the 2014 season on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader in Williamsburg, KY against the University of the Cumberlands Patriots
In the opener, the Patriots got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth on a sac fly by Right Fielder Matt Madrigal. The Patriots would extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks in large part to three Bearcat errors that allowed the Patriots to push the lead to 4-0. The Bearcats would get a run back in the top of the sixth when First Baseman Christian McHatton drove in the Bearcats first run of the year. The Bearcats would add another run in the seventh on a Patriot error before Closer Claudio Valencia recorded the last out with the tying runs in scoring position for a 4-2 win.
Senior Second Baseman Vin Barbato led the Bearcats at the plate with a 3-3 day. Senior Starting Pitcher Andrew Shoulders pitched well despite taking the loss. Shoulders worked 4 1/3 innings and only allowed one earned run before leaving in the fifth.

In game 2 it was the Bearcats getting on the board first when Senior Third Baseman Alex Hegge led off the top of the second with his first homerun of the year. The Bearcats would add two more runs in the inning on a two run single by Center Fielder Brady Reese making the lead 3-0. The Patriots would get a run back in the third on an RBI single by Second Baseman Claudio Valencia. The score stayed 3-1 until the fifth when Left Fielder Daniel Lokesak singled, stole second base, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch to push the lead back to three.
Starting Pitcher Taylor Garcia-Grisham would work 5 2/3 innings allowing one earned run on four hits before giving way to Relief Pitcher Caleb McIntire in the sixth. McIntire entered the game with the tying run at the plate, but produced a strikeout to close the frame. The Bearcats would then explode in the top of the seventh. Reese reached on a walk to get things started and scored on a double by Lokesak to make the score 5-1. Nate Crocker and Alex Hegge would both follow with walks before a balk scored Lokesak. Designated Hitter Hank Stewart promptly deposited the next pitch over the center field fence to make the score 9-1. The Bearcats would add one more run in the inning to make the score 10-1. McIntire worked around an error and a hit to close things out in the bottom of the seventh for the clubs first win of the year.
