The Bearcats 2014 season was a historical season for the program, but despite many single season and career records being broken the Bearcats fell flat in the KIAC Tournament losing it's first two games and making an early exit. The Bearcats set a new school record with 35 wins on the year, 12 more than the previous season. During Head Coach Aaron Biddle's first season in 2011 the Bearcats won 13 games and have seen their win total improve every year culminating in the 35 win 2014 season and earning Biddle the KIAC Coach of the Year Award.
Offensively the Bearcats were led by Senior Catcher Hank Stewart, who tied a single season school record with a .447 Batting Average and broke school records with 72 RBI's, .803 Slugging Percentage and a .538 On-Base Percentage in route to being named 1st Team All-Conference, KIAC Player of the Year, 2nd Team NAIA All-American and KIAC Male Athlete of the Year. The Bearcats also had notable offensive contributions from 1st Team All-Conference performers Alex Hegge, who broke the school's career record for runs scored, Daniel Lokesak, who led the team in Stolen Bases (25) and Christian McHatton, who tied Lokesak for the team lead with three triples. Catcher/Designated Hitter Aaron King also set a single season record with 18 Hit By Pitches on the year. Offensively, the Bearcats saw their batting average raise by 20 points from .289 to .309 with improvements in runs, hits, triples, homeruns, RBI's, Slugging, on-base, and stolen bases.
"Coach Aubin has been a consistent figure for these hitters over the past three year," said Coach Biddle. "When you consistently hear the same message, day after day, year after year it allows guys to become comfortable inside of a philosophy. Coach Aubin has brought that consistency to our hitters and to this program over the last three years. He has been invaluable to this program."
On the mound the Bearcats produced a school record 4.55 ERA under first year Pitching Coach Thomas Nelson. The Bearcats were led by KIAC Pitcher of the Year Andrew Shoulders. Shoulders set a school record with 11 wins and signed a Professional Contract with the Santa Fe Fuego of the Pecos League at the conclusion of the season. The Bearcats also saw Junior Christian McHatton set a single season record with a 2.24 ERA, while posting a 7-1 record. Junior Michael McIntosh set a single season record with 11 saves on the year, as him and McHatton earned 2nd Team All-Conference Honors. The Bearcats also, saw improvements in Complete Games, Shutouts, Saves, Hits, Base on Balls, and Opponent's Batting Average.
"The pitching staff under Coach Nelson has been incredible this year. He is the unsung hero of this season," said Biddle. "Coach Nelson gave the pitchers the one on one attention that they really haven't received since I've been here and the results have been incredible. I'm excited to see how much better we can get when they get the same type of consistency that our hitters have gotten over the past three years."
The Bearcats will lose six seniors off of this year's squad, including Stewart and Shoulders. The Bearcats will only be returning five of the nine starters and two of the four weekend pitchers but have already signed 13 new players for next year.
"With the guys we have returning and the guys we have coming in, I feel like we will continue to be a solid club. Myself and the rest of the coaching staff have worked to hard to take steps back. We will continue to work hard and continue to improve day in and day out," said Biddle. " I will not rest until we win a KIAC Championship."
