The Brescia Bearcats cross country teams competed in the Divison II Midwest Regional Preview Meet, hosted by the University of Southern Indiana, on Saturday. The meet was unlike any other the teams faced this year as the women raced the 6,000m distance and both teams were the only NAIA schools in the race.
In the women's race Olivia Warren (Sr.) set a new school record in the distance by running a time of 24:03, over 2 minutes faster than the previous record. She was not alone in besting the previous mark as the next three ladies also beat the previous mark. Sophomore, Courtney Naas ran 24:25 in her first 6K race and Embra Hawkins followed in 25:02. Samantha Walker (Sr.) also ran a time of 25:38. Rounding out the scoring, and batteling illness, was previous school record holder, Cassie King.
Head Coach Alan Schulze had the following remarks, "This was a great day for our team. It was a little surprising how well the women ran based on the amount of work they've done lately; but these girls never cease to amaze me. Olivia ran the best race of her career and every other girl ran the equivilent of a season best."
For the men, they were led by Freshman standout, Tristan Durbin who set a new personal best of 26:47. He was followed by classmate Denis Koske who ran 27:31, also a personal best. Trey Drury (Jr.) also ran a PR by nearly 30-seconds by running 29:06.
"The guys ran extrememly tough today. It is a great day when we get to see our hard work pay off.", said Coach Schulze. "Durbin was very aggressive and ran great, Denis is getting better every day, and Trey is running over a minute better than he was last year."
Next up for the harriers is the KIAC Championships in Pittsburgh, PA on 11/8.
