The Brescia cross country teams sent two young runners to compete in the NAIA National Cross Country Championships on Saturday, 11/22. Tristan Durbin (Fr.) and Courtney Naas (So.) both qualified for the meet as individuals. The meet, hosted by Kansas University in Lawrence, KS was home to over 650 of the best runners in the country.
In the women's race, Naas finished 252nd out of 336 runners. In a race of that magnitude, it is quite an accomplishment. She finished with a time of 20:38, nearly a full minute faster than she ran at the meet last year.
Head Coach, Alan Schulze had the following remarks about Courtney's race, "I think Courtney ran a spectacular race. On a day like this, and especially on a course like this, your overall time isn't everything. Her time this year far surpassed that of last year so her improvement is impressive in itself. I was especially impressed with how tough she ran all throughout the race."
On the men's side, Freshman, Tristan Durbin placed 244th in a field of 320. In his first National Championship race he crossed the finish line with a time of 27:43.
"Tristan was a little upset with his performance, but I think, in time he will realize that it wasn't nearly as bad as he thought. As a freshman, at a meet like this, it's a little bit of culture shock. He's never been in a race where the competition is this heavy. It proved to be a great learning experience for him and I feel that he learned a lot from it.", said Coach Schulze.
