The Brescia Men's Basketball team traveled to Upland, Indiana this weekend to participate in the 31st Annual Ivanhoe's Classic at Taylor University. The Bearcats played two very different games on Friday and Saturday, and settled for a split on the weekend.
On Friday night, Brescia took on future KIAC conference opponent Ohio Christian University in the nightcap of the first day of the classic. After trailing by 3, 42-39 at the half, the Bearcats fell to the Trailblazers by a final score of 77-69. Brescia struggled to get going initially, but 18 first-half points from sophomore Trey Howard kept them close. The game stayed close throughout, with BU having a chance to tie the contest with the ball and trailing 67-70, but Ohio Christian closed the game on a 7-2 run to salt away the victory. Howard led all scorers on the night with 26 points. He was joined in double-figures by DeCarlos Collier with 14 points and Austin Morris with 12 points.
Saturday was a much different story, as the Bearcats jumped out to an early lead and took a 43-30 advantage into the halftime break. A quick run to open the second stanza quickly pushed the lead past the 20-point mark and Brescia never looked back as they cruised to victory by the score of 80-58. Twelve different players found their way into the scorebook for the Bearcats, with all five starters scoring between 9 and 15 points. Leading the balanced attack was Jordan Cooper-Livers with 15 points (to go with a career-best 11 rebounds), Austin Morris with 13 points and 13 rebounds, Trey Howard with 12 points, DeCarlos Collier with 10 points, and Kyle Nixon with 9 points. For his efforts in the two contests, Trey Howard was named to the Ivanhoe's Classic All-Tournament Team.
Coach Gibson on the weekend: "We were not pleased with our effort Friday night. Ohio Christian is a good team, but we did not feel as though we brought our best effort to the game. Thankfully, it was a quick turnaround into Saturday's game and we had another chance to play with principle. Outside of not doing a very good job of taking care of the ball, I felt like we put forth a much better effort on Saturday. We made them work on the defensive end of the court and did a good job of containing their scorers. The energy and execution we demonstrated on Saturday is much more consistent with the identity and character of Brescia Basketball."
Brescia will return to the hardwood next Saturday, December 13th when they travel to Purdue North Central for a 2:00pm (EST) tip.
