The Bearcats track and field teams traveled to Saint Louis University to compete in the Billiken Invite on Friday and Saturday. The meet was host to many of the top teams in the Midwest at the Division I, II, III, and NAIA levels.
Friday night was host to the distance events where BU had four individuals running the 5,000m. Junior, Drew Atkins and Freshman, Chase McCauley competed for the men in the event. Atkins ran a personal best time of 16:03 by placing 2nd in his section, while McCauley ran a time of 17:05. Atkins' finish moves him into 3rd on the All-Time Brescia list. In the ladies' competition, Olivia Warren (Sr.) and Courtney Naas (Fr.) also ran the 5,000m race. Warren won her section in a school record time of 19:05 while Naas finished with a personal best 19:45.
Saturday's competition was home to the shorter-distance events. Freshman, Darrian McNary, in her first collegiate race, set a school record by winning her section of the 400m dash in a time of 1:03.72. Classmate, Mackenzie Weyer, set school records in both the shot put and the discus. Overall, she placed 10th in the discus, missing the finals by one spot. TJ Miller (So.) also won his section of the men's 400m in a personal best time of 52.31.
"This was a huge weekend for our program.", said Head Coach Alan Schulze. "It certainly appears we're improving at just the right time. With 2 weeks before the conference championships, this is exactly the meet we needed. There was really no aspect of the meet that we can't be pleased about. What we are lacking in overall team size, we're making up for in determination. This weekend, we competed against some very good programs and didn't back down an inch."
The team will not compete this upcoming weekend and will hit the track again April 24th and 25th for the KIAC Championships.
