Traci Smith enters her twelfth season as the head softball coach at Brescia University.
The Lady Bearcats were very young in the 2017 season. They showed a lot of improvement and potential to be major contenders in the 2018 season.
In the 2015 season the Lady Bearcats finished with a 23-17 record (20-12, KIAC). The previous season also held success as the team garnered a 27-21 record while finishing 11-7 in the KIAC. Coach Smith will look to lead the ladies into RSC Championship contention this year. With the emergence of the newcomers and along with solid returners, the upcoming season looks promising.
While at Brescia, Coach Smith has produced 26 1st Team All-Conference performers and eight Academic All-Americans.
Smith’s vast coaching and community experiences spans over 34 years in Owensboro and its surrounding areas. She has held an array of coaching positions spanning through all ages. She has also coached baseball, basketball, and volleyball; along with board and supervising positions amongst these sports. Coach Smith was also an ASA umpire for 12 years while holding a Director’s position for numerous, State, Regional, and National tournaments.
An Owensboro native, Coach Smith attended Apollo High School before taking her talents to Kentucky Wesleyan College where she played softball, volleyball, and basketball.
She and her husband, Bernie, who is the batting coach for the softball team, reside in Owensboro. Their son, Jake and his wife Melissa currently live in Louisville, KY. They also have two chocolate labs named Rudy and Yogi.
