[Softball] Smith Receives Coach of the Year Honors - Four Players Named All-KIAC

Coach Traci Smith led her team to a 27-21 mark this season. This was an 18 game improvement from last year. She was named KIAC Softball Coach of the Year.

Four Brescia Student-Athletes were named tothe All-Conference Team.

Brescia women's soccer recently announced the signing of Tori Montgomery of Newark, Ohio. Tori has been a standout goalkeeper for Licking Valley High School and was selected as team captain for both her junior and senior years. She earned the Most Valuable Player Award for two years, received a Sportsmanship Award from the OHSAA, and was an all state nomination her senior year.

Bearcats Garner Post-Season Awards

Several Bearcats earned post-season recognition this past week. Starting Pitcher Tyler Richardson, First Baseman Christian McHatton, Outfielder Alex Hegge and Designated Hitter Matt Boyd were all named First Team All-Conference. Starting Pitcher Thomas White, Catcher Matt Cissell and Shortstop Jordan Robison were named Second Team All-Conference. Center Fielder Brady Flaspoehler made the Conference Gold Glove Team and Christian McHatton was named KIAC Freshman of the Year.

[Women's Soccer] Women's Soccer Signs Nashville McGavock's Burelos

Women's soccer coach Dave Donahue recently made a productive trip to Nashville when he signed McGavock High School midfielder Eva Burelos to a National Letter of Intent. Eva was a four year starter on the McGavock varsity leading her team to the district finals for the fourth year in a row. Eva finished the season with 11 assists and 13 goals from her center midfield position. She earned All District and All Region for two years and was the team MVP both her junior and senior years. Eva capped off her senior year and high school career by being selected as the district MVP in Nashville as well as McGavock's "Metro Female Athlete of the Year."

Bearcats Season Comes to Close

The Brescia University Bearcats season came to a close on Friday in the KIAC Tournament with a 15-0 loss to IU-Southeast. The Bearcats had beaten Alice Lloyd 5-2 in a loser's bracket game to get to IUS. The Bearcats finished the season with a 20-34 record, but tied IU-Southeast at 11-5 for the best regular season record in the conference. The 20 wins was a seven win improvement from the previous season and with only 4 seniors graduating the Bearcats will return a very experienced team in 2013.

[Men's Tennis] Tennis Season Ends

The Brescia University Men's Tennis team fell to IU Southeast 5-1 in the semi-finals of the KIAC Conference Championships held in Richmond, IN.

Julien Chenneberg and Moises Goncalves came back from a 5-2 defecit to take the #1 doubles match 8-6 while Jacob Blevins and Spencer Hall could not overcome an early break to fall 8-6 at #3 doubles, which gave IU Southeast a 2-1 lead after the doubles.

Blevins retired at #3 singles tied 2-2 in the first set with a back injury to make the deficit 3-1. IU Southeast quickly closed out the match with wins at #5 and #6 singles. Brescia led in two of the remaining singles matches with Chenneberg having won the first set at #1 singles.

The Bearcats had reached the semi-finals with a win earlier over Berea 9-0. The match was highlighted by a 8-6 come from behind victory at #2 doubles by Logan Stull and Isaac Duncan.

Brescia University finishes the year at 4-7. Julien Chenneberg was named to the all-conference team for the third time along with teammate Moise Goncalves

[Women's Basketball] Brescia University Women's Basketball Announces Their 2012 Recruiting Class

The Brescia University Women's Basketball program signed eight talented young ladies for the 2012 class. "This is the most talented group of players we have brought to Brescia University since I have been here." said Coach John Swickrath. "We have a great mix of size, length, speed, and shooting." he added.

The first signee of the year on November 21, 2011 was Mary Decker (Daviess County High School) Mary transferred to Daviess County for her senior season from Breckenridge County. She is averaged 12.5 points per game, nearly 7 rebounds per game, all while shooting 41% from the floor and 33% from behind the arc.

"We are excited for the addition of Mary. She is an outstanding students first and an outstanding basketball player on the court. We know she will fit right in with our team and be a successful Lady Bearcat for the next four years. What's most impressive about Mary is her ability to step out and make the open three." said Swickrath

The next two signees were on back to back days January 10-11, 2012. Those two young ladies were Alex Washington (Apollo) and Julie Whitfill (Breckenridge County).

Julie Whitfillis a prolific scorer from the wing and averaged 23 points per game this season. Whitfill can score from long range and she is very accurate from the free-throw line (84%).

Whitfill was one of the top 10 scorers in the state and made the Kentucky East vs. West All-Star Team and was invited to try out for the KY All-Star team. Whitfill dropped 30 points on Apollo in a 56-47 win this season. Whitfill also scored 27 points in their season's opening loss at Daviess County (52-43). She finished her career as the all-time leading scorer at Breckenridge County High School.

"She is great for us to get, and she is another one who has her best basketball ahead of her. She gets in the lane, she gets to the free-throw line, and she's got a good mid-range game, which a lot of players don't work on anymore." said Swickrath

Alex Washingtonis a diverse athlete that can do just a little bit of everything on the floor

"Alex is the type of player we don't really have with her athleticism." "She was in open gym with some of our players last summer, and we were surprised with the form on her shot. With some work and some repetition, Alex can be a pretty dynamic player by the time she is a sophomore." said Swickrath

Washington is 5-foot-9 and plays inside for the E-Gals, and averaged 9.2 points and 5.5 rebounds a game.

The next person to sign with the Lady Bearcats was Kaylyn Cecil (Elizabethtown High School).

"We are extremely excited to have KK joining us next season. She is tall, long and athletic being 5-10 and playing the 2 guard. She can shoot the ball very well from the outside and gets to the rim very well, which results in free throws quite often." said Swickrath

Cecil played on a team that went 26-6 and lost in the Regional Final to Marion County, the team that was the State Runner-up this year. Cecil averaged 13 points and two rebounds per game. She shot 46% from the field, 39% from three, and 83% from the free throw line. Cecil scored over 1000 points in her career, was named to the All-Region team 3 times, voted to Junior All-Stars, and Area Sophomore of the Year.

"What is more important than all of the stats are that she is a quality young lady off of the court and she fits right in with the rest of her teammates." added Swickrath

One week later there were back to back signings once again in Kelsea Wilson (Grayson County) and Jill Jones (Daviess County) March 21-22, 2012.

Kelsea Wilson, a six foot standout power forward for the Grayson County Lady Cougars was a two year starter. She finished her career with 1586 points and 1177 rebounds. During this past season she helped lead her team to the Regional Finals averaging 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. She scored 32 points vs. Owensboro Catholic and Meade Co. Wilson also grabbed career high 21 rebounds her sophomore year vs. Oldham Co. and 19 this past season vs. Hart Co.

Wilson played in the Kentucky East vs. West All-Star game during the State Tournament, and was invited to try out for the KY All-Star team. She was the 2012 Third Region KABC Player of the Year

She has been named All-District, All-Region, All-District Tournament Team, and All-Region Tournament Team multiple times in her career.

"We are not only getting a really good basketball player, we are getting a young lady that has great character. Kelsea is multi-talented from the stand point she can beat and bang inside, but can also step out and knock down the three." said Swickrath

The next day Coach Swickrath signed Jill Jones a 5'7" point guard from Daviess County High School was 2nd team all 3rd region this year, all 9th district tournament team, and all-tournament team at Bullitt East Holiday Tournament.

Jones averaged 16 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals per game this year. She did this all while shooting 48% from the floor, 33% from three, and 72% from the free throw line. "We are extremely excited to have Jill joining this great recruiting class. Jill has a great ability to get to the rim and finish with contact along with shooting from the outside." said Swickrath

Jill had career highs in points 25 and steals 7 vs. Hancock County this year. She had career high 7 rebounds vs. Hopkinsville and 5 assists in multiple games.

The following week March 27, 2012 Coach Swickrath traveled to Hart County to sign Lexee Wilson.

Wilson, a point guard that averaged 16 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game her senior season for the Lady Raiders. Wilson made 42 three-point shots her senior year, while shooting 44% from the field, and 73% from the charity stripe.

Wilson ended her career ranked 5th all-time at Hart County with 1744 points. She was All-District and All--District Tournament team for the last three seasons. She was a member of the All-Region team 2010-2011, and a member of the 2011 AAU State Championship team. Lexee was on the Kentucky Junior All-Stars East vs. West, and named the Bluegrass Cellular Player of the Year 2010.

"We are very excited to get such a quality young lady that is equally talented on and off of the court. Lexee is a true point guard that can get up and down the court in transition and distribute, runs the show in the half court, and to finish it all off can put the ball in the hoop." said Swickrath

Coach Swickrath finished up his recruiting class on April 11, 2012 by signing Sarah Martin (Daviess County)

In her senior season Martin averaged 13 points and 7 rebounds per game. She only played in 16 this season, coming off of an ACL tear last summer. She got stronger as the season went along and scored a season high 25 points in the last game of the season vs. Muhlenberg County High School.

In her career Martin accumulated 1043 points and 729 rebounds. She was named to the All-District team twice and the All-Region team once. She was named to the Holiday Classic All-Tournament team twice and she was Honorable-Mention All-Academic team four times. She led her AAU team to a Kentucky State Championship, and also 8th and 11th place finishes at Nationals.

"Sarah is an amazing get for us. She is a great post player that was really starting to develop some guard skills before her injury. She worked hard to come back and we know her best ball is ahead of her." Said Swickrath

[] Larry Cox to Head the Brescia University Athletics Department

Larry Cox has been named the Brescia University Director of Athletics. Cox comes to Brescia from the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, OH.

Cox coached the men's basketball team at the College of Mount St. Joseph's for 13 seasons from 1998-2011. He started the program in 1998 and his team finished with a winning record in its inaugural season. He built the Mount program into a solid, competitive team in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Cox was also the Assistant Athletics Director for seven years. During that time he was the direct supervisor of Football, Men's and Women's Golf, Men's and Women's Tennis, and Cheer. He coordinated transportation, helped with marketing campaigns, and event management for all 24 sports. In his time at CMSJ Cox was part of a transformation in the Athletics Department from 14 teams for 24.

"I am very appreciative of the confidence that President Father Larry Hostetter and Dean of Students James Fitzpatrick are putting into me to be the next person to lead the Brescia Bearcats Athletic Department." said Cox. "It's humbling and I am looking forward to building upon the great academic and athletic excellence here at Brescia University." added Cox.

Coach Cox's first head coaching position came in the 1990 season at Thomas More College as he inherited a program that had not had a winning season in a decade and during his coaching tenure he turned the program around - finishing with four straight winning seasons. He compiled an overall record of 96-95 and was named AMC Coach of the Year in both the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons, while also leading his school to the AMC regular season and tournament championships.

Prior to his tenure at Thomas More, Cox was the associate head coach from 1983-1989 at St. Joseph's College (Indiana), an NCAA Division II program, where he helped lead the program to an average of 16 wins a season in the tough Great Lakes Valley Conference, which includes perennial powerhouses Kentucky Wesleyan, Southern Indiana and Northern Kentucky.

Cox also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at NCAA Division I Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1981-82 and 1982-83. During the first season the Falcons were conference runners-up and in the second season they won the Mid-American Conference outright finishing with a 21-9 record. For two seasons, from 1979-1981, he was an assistant at Hanover College (Indiana), where the school averaged 24 wins a season, won two Hoosier-Buckeye Conference Championships and advanced to the Elite Eight in the NAIA National Tournament.

Cox holds a Bachelor of Arts in History degree from Hanover College (Indiana) and a Master of Arts in History degree and a Master of Education in Physical Education degree from Bowling Green State University (Ohio). He has taught classes at Bowling Green State University, St. Joseph's College, Thomas More College, and the Mount. During his tenure as a head coach, every player who has completed their four years of eligibility has their degree.

Cox and his wife, Beth, currently reside in West Chester, Ohio and have triplet sons, Luke, Jake and Ryan born on October 26, 2007.

[Men's Golf] Brescia Wins KIAC Crown

Haydon Young tied for medalist honors and the Brescia University men's golf team qualified for next month's NAIA finals with a victory at the Kentucky

Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday at StoneCrest golf course in Prestonsburg.

Haydon and Cincinnati Christian's George Smart finished with three-day totals of 229. There was no playoff.

Other scorers for Brescia were Tyler Lyon, who tied for fifth at 232. Mike Galloway shot 240, Dylan Vaught finished at 241 and Travis Fulkerson shot 244.

The NAIA National Championships will be held May 22-25 at Creekside Country Club in Salem, Ore.

[Women's Golf] Women's Golf Wins Title

Brescia University's women's golf team captured the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference golf championship on Tuesday at Maywood Golf Course in Bardstown.

The Lady Bearcats won the two-day, 36-hole event with a team score of 730.

Bretnea Turner led Brescia and was individual champion at 165. Also scoring for BU Schyler Pentecost (184), Rachel Lindow (188) and Rose Ripa (193).

Asbury, finishing second at 759, was led by Madison Combs (173).

The Bearcats dropped a pair of games to the University of the Cumberlands on Sunday, falling 8-7 and 13-7 at Kamuf Park.

Brady Flaspoehler went 4-for-5 and scored three runs for the Bearcats in the second game. Brescia was plagued by six errors.

Andy Dickson was 3-for-5 for Brescia in the opener. Christian McHatton was 3-for-4.

The Lady Bearcats topped Kentucky Wesleyan 346-359 on Sunday at Ben Hawes Golf Course.

Bretnea Turner led the Lady Bearcats with a 7-over-par 79. Courtney Wathen shot 86 to pace KWC on a windy day.

Rachel Lindow shot 88 for Brescia, followed by Rose Rippa with 89 and Schyler Pentecost at 90.

Emily Thompson shot 88 for KWC. Sam Woods shot 90 and Amy Staples finished with a 95 for the Panthers.

The Bearcats won the first game 4-2, then gave up three runs in the seventh inning of the second game in a 5-4 setback in a Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup at Wilmore.

Christian McHatton went 2-for-2 for the Bearcats (18-26) in the first game. Brady Flaspoehler and Jordan Robinson had two hits each for Brescia in the second contest.
