Bearcats Compete at DePauw Invitational
The Brescia University track teams competed in Greencastle, IN at the DePauw University Invitational on Valentine's Day. The meet was host to over a dozen schools who battled harsh weather and road conditions to attend what is annually a staple in most teams' schedules. The competition is host to teams from Division I, II, & III; along with NAIA and JUCO.
In the men's races, Freshman sprinter and hurdler, Brent Crawford set a new school record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 10.3 while also setting a personal best in the 200m. Classmate, Tristan Durbin raced the mile in a time of 4:48.6
However, the bulk of the men's team raced the 3,000m. Junior's, Drew Atkins and Trey Drury along with Chase McCauley (Fr.) all competed in the event. Atkins won the race with a time of 9:19, a new personal best by an astonishing 31 seconds. He was victorious by 13 seconds - nearly 1/2 lap. The result moves him up to 4th All-Time in BU history.Drury barely missed a personal best with his time of 9:51, while McCauley improved his personal best to 10:01.
Head Coach, Alan Schulze had the following remarks on the men's competition, "All things considering I'm pretty happy with the men's team for today. Right now just about everyone on the team is banged up with a nagging injury. If nothing else we showed guts! For the first time in a while we raced very aggressively; sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't." He also added, "Drew had an amazing race. He continues to impress!"
In the women's competition, Senior, Olivia Warren set a new personal best in the mile with a time of 5:47.2, in a race much shorter than she is accustomed. The mark is good for 4th All-Time in the Brescia record books. Courtney Naas (So.) missed a personal best in the 3,000m by a mere .5 seconds.
"I love what we saw out of the ladies today - we're definitely making progress. Naas ran a great race - even better than what her time shows. Olivia came through in a race she's only run a handful of times. A girl that has only done one true speed session in 6-8 weeks and goes to PR in the mile - that's impressive."
The track & field team will be back in action when they conclude their indoor campaign at Anderson University on 2/28.
