Bearcats Finish Indoor Season at Anderson University
The Brescia indoor track and field teams closed out the years indoor track campaign at the Fred Wilt Invitational, hosted by Anderson University. The meet was host to 20 universities and teams, mainly from the NCAA DIII rankings.
The Bearcats opened the meet with sprints and hurdles which saw Tori King (Fr.) run a time of 9.31 in the 60m dash; a time good enough for 2nd All-Time in school history. Classmate, Brent Crawford also broke his own school record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 10.81.
Sophomore, Courtney Naas battled tough competition, and a very fast early pace, to gain a new indoor personal record time of 19:56 in the 5,000m run. Mackenzie Weyer (Fr.) earned a top-10 finish in the shot put with a throw of 10.08m.
However, possibly the highlight of the day was Junior, Andrew Atkins winning his section of the men's mile and placing 3rd overall in the meet. Atkins finished a personal best time of 4:28.5; an astounding 15 second improvement from last season. The time also marks him 2nd in the All-Time record books at Brescia University. In the Bearcats' four indoor meets this season, Atkins has won three individual races. His performances cap off one of the more impressive indoor campaigns in recent history for the Bearcats.
"We've battled a lot lately and with that in mind I'm pretty pleased with our efforts today. We had some individuals close out indoor season on a high note and others that will have some work to do before outdoor arrives - but that's expected.", said Coach Alan Schulze. He also had the following remarks about individual performances, "Brent is a guy who works hard and I was really glad to see him shave time off in the hurdles. I thought [Courtney] Naas ran a great race. She put herself in great position and just faded a little in the end. Drew [Atkins], most deserving, had a fantastic day! His work ethic, along with his talent and ability are all catching up to one another."
The teams will now continue training for the upcoming outdoor track schedule that will begin in late March.
