Men's Volleyball Calms Redstorm
OWENSBORO, Ky. - The Brescia University men's volleyball team swept Rio Grande in their opening match of conference play. The Bearcats improve to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in RSC play.
OWENSBORO, Ky. - The Brescia University men's volleyball team swept Rio Grande in their opening match of conference play. The Bearcats improve to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in RSC play.
Brescia set the tone by starting the first set on a 7-2 run. Rio Grande fought back to get within two of the Bearcat lead. The Bearcats held off the Redstorm to win set one, 25-21. The Bearcats carried the first set momentum into the next and never relinquished the lead, securing a 2-0 match score.
The third set saw the Bearcats jump out to an commanding lead of 17-7. This lead them to win and sweep the Redstorm with a 25-14 set three score.
The anchor for the Bearcats was senior, middle hitter, Mustafa Yildiz, who recorded only five kills on nine attempts with no errors while hitting .556. He also added six total blocks and three service aces. Leading the Bearcats in kills was freshman outside hitter, Malo Vandewalle with 11 kills. Joaquin Palacios added to the scoring with seven kills, along with Remi Pit with five, Ben Zerwes with four, and Miguel Pereira with three. The Bearcats hit .333 for the match.
Helping the offense was freshman setter Will Hernandez with 17 assists and Finn Berger with 11 of his own. Miguel Veloso had four digs to lead the team, as Schmidt and Hernandez combined for six more.

Next up for the Bearcats, BU takes on Campbellsville in the Moore Center Tuesday night, 2/24, with first serve at 7:00 p.m. The Tigers will come into the match undefeated and ranked 5th in the nation.
