Bearcats Place 6th at Rio Grande Classic
The Brescia men's cross country team competed at the Rio Grande Classic in Rio Grande, Ohio on September 26th, placing sixth as a team.
"I'm pleased with the performances we had from the men's team," said Head Coach Luke Stoffel. "Rio Grande's course is a challenging course and had long stretches directly in the sun. I focused more on how the team adjusted throughout the race and responded to the course rather than the time."
Jeremy White-Zavala (FR, Beaver Dam, Ky.), Benjamin Brown (SO, Memphis, Mich.), and Wesley Abney (FR, Russellville, Ky.) finished as the top three for the team, completing the 8k in 31:23, 31:57, and 32:10, respectively. The team placed the top three all within a minute of each other.
Caleb Sandefur (FR, Hartford, Ky.) and Keitel McCoy (FR, Douglasville, Ga.) rounded out the top five for the Bearcats, running 33:35 and 35:52 on the challenging course.
Despite the course, Sandefur and Abney both had PR (personal record) performances, with Sandefur PRing by two seconds and Abney by six seconds.
James Barrow (SO, Elizabethtown, Ky.) and Draven Stewart (FR, Leitchfield, Ky.) also completed the race, finishing in 59th and 60th, respectively.
"We have a few guys who didn't compete at this race who we are hoping to have ready for the next one. I think having next week off from competition will help get the team ready for Fast Cats," said Stoffel.
The Bearcats will be back in action on October 9th at the Fast Cats Classic at home in Owensboro, Kentucky. Follow the men's and women's cross country teams on Facebook (Brescia XC & TF), Instagram (brescia_xc_and_tf), and Twitter (@BUxc_track) to keep up with the program.
