Women's Track opens season at Friday Night Spikes
The Brescia University women's track & field team opened up the 2022 indoor track & field season on Friday, January 21st at Rose-Hulman, placing 3rd of 5.

Distance:
In the 800m run, the duo of Lexi Nicholas (SR/Hawesville, KY) and Carmela Shorkey (FR/Macomb, MI) placed first and second, running 2:40.33 and 2:48.21.
Shorkey and Nicholas also competed in the mile, placing 10th and 11th with times of 6:03.93 and 6:08.33.
Hailey Vitolo (JR/Perry, OH) led the Bearcats in the 3,000m run, placing fourth with a time of 12:26.09. Abagale Huelsman (JR/Fort Branch, IN), Katlyn Varnadore (FR/Brighton, TN), and Morgan Curry (SO/Hawesville, KY) also competed in the event, placing fifth, sixth, and seventh, respectively.
Jumps:
Jordyn Cardwell (FR/Union, KY) led the team with a first place finish in long jump, moving to second all-time for the Bearcats in the event with a jump of 4.92m. Sheyenna Stytz (SO/Ledbetter, KY) and Abigail Burgett (SO/Dawson Springs, KY) also earned points for the Bearcats, placing sixth and seventh with jumps of 4.47m and 4.45m.
Mallory Toler (SR/Rockport, IN), Carmela Shorkey, and Alayna Petri (SO/Owensboro, KY) also competed in long jump, placing seventh, eighth, and tenth.
In triple jump, Cardwell set a new school record of 10.65m, which was good for a second place finish at the meet. Cardwell took down Kassi Gilbert's previous record of 9.86m from 2020.
Toler and Stytz also scored points in triple jump, jumping 9.06m and 8.73m.
Sprints:
The Bearcats had three student-athletes qualify for the 60m dash finals. Jeneil Morris (FR/Trinidad & Tobago) led the way for the Bearcats in the event, placing second overall and setting a new school record of 8.33 seconds. Morris's new record replaced Abigail Burgett's previous record of 8.49 seconds from last season.
Burgett and Ashaunte Watts (SO/Radcliff, KY) also competed in the 60m finals, placing fifth and sixth with times of 8.44 seconds and 8.61 seconds. Burgett also ran faster ran than her previous school record in the event.
In the 60m hurdles, Jordyn Cardwell placed third with a time of 10.22 seconds, which also set a new school record -- her second school record of the night. She bested Jada Saunders (JR/Louisville, KY)' previous school record of 10.49 seconds from last season.
In the 200m, Morris placed fifth with a time of 28.25 seconds, which was good for her second school record of the meet. Her time beat Breanna Chester (SR/Henderson, KY)'s previous school record of 29.44 seconds from 2020.
Saunders and Watts also competed in the 200m dash, running 29.48 seconds and 30.51 seconds.
In the 4x200m relay, the team of Alayna Petri, Ashaunte Watts, Sheyenna Stytz, and Jada Saunders placed second with a time of 1:59.99.
The 4x400m relay team of Lexi Nicholas, Abigail Burgett, Jada Saunders, and Carmela Shorkey set a new school record of 4:40.02, taking down the previous relay record from 2011.
Throws:
Ashby Greenwell (FR/Henderson, KY) set a new school record in weight throw, throwing 9.73m. She took down Jonce Caldwell's previous school record of 9.48m from 2020.
Greenwell also competed in shot put, placing third overall with a throw of 10.73m.
