Cookson Announced as Head Women's Volleyball Coach
OWENSBORO, KY – The Brescia University Athletic Department has named Madison Cookson as its head Women’s Volleyball coach.
Cookson has been with the Bearcats for the past four seasons as an assistant coach. In that role, she played a pivotal part in talent identification and recruitment. Player development was key as her philosophy is centered around improving each athlete on and off the court. Her resume includes strong skills in analyzing game statistics, scouting, instruction, and program efficiency.
Cookson said she is absolutely thrilled to lead this program into the upcoming season. "Taking on this leadership role is an incredible opportunity to mentor these student-athletes and build a culture of excellence at Brescia University," she said. "We are entering a new era of Brescia Volleyball, one built on grit, discipline, and an unwavering belief in what we can accomplish."
She is a graduate of Bethel and Oakland City University where she played her collegiate career. She also held a head coaching position at the Metro Volleyball Club coaching young athletes and building their fundamentals.
Keith Cottoner, Vice President of Athletic Affairs, said promoting Cookson to the head coaching position was an easy and exciting decision. "She stepped in as the interim when the role opened and immediately carried herself like the true leader of the women's volleyball program," he said. "After talking with her, it was clear she was fully invested because her passion and belief in this team were undeniable."
Cottoner added that the decision became more special after hearing directly from the players. "They made it clear that she was the coach they believed in and wanted to follow," he said. "When Madison was officially introduced as the head coach during a spring practice, the team's reaction said it all: the energy, the excitement, and the way they erupted in support. It was an incredible moment and one I won't forget."
Cookson said she is energized by the team's potential for the upcoming seaons. "I have been incredibly impressed by what I saw during spring season and our summer training. Our athletes are putting in tremendous work behind the scenes right now, and they are hungry to get started," she said. "I look forward to pushing them every day to become the best versions of themselves, not just on the court, but in the classroom and out in our community."
Cottoner closed by adding that he and Brescia are truly excited for what's ahead. "Madison has everything it takes to lead, and I can't wait to watch her, and this team continue to grow, compete, and succeed together," he said.
