OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Brescia University baseball team defeated Division II opponent, Kentucky State, in a run rule victory. The 12-2 win improved the Bearcat's record to 7-8 on the year.
Each team went scoreless in the opening frame of the contest until Hayden Jones punished a ball over the right field wall to give BU the 2-0 advantage. Jones would see the plate again in the bottom of the third where he lifted another ball over right center for his second long ball of the game. A passed ball and a wild pitch extended the Bearcats lead to six as Grant Huebner scored from third. In the same inning, Joseph Massa scored on the next wild pitch from the Thorobreds pitcher as the Bearcats go up 7-0. BU pushed three more runs across home in the bottom of the fifth as they continued to shut out Kentucky State.
The Thorobreds avoided the 10-run run rule in the top of the seventh inning as their back-to-back hits earned them two runs. The Bearcats made up for the hits with a few walks, and another passed ball as they scored two more runs for the win.
Hayden Jones led the offense going 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, and six RBIs at the plate. Jax Lee earned his first win on the bump for BU going three innings with five strikeouts.
The Bearcats will host a neutral site game against IU Kokomo at Oakland City University on Friday, Mar. 6 at 12/3pm.
