HENDERSON, TN – The Brescia University women's basketball team moves to 2-0 on the season following their 54-46 win against Cumberland University (TN) in day one of the FHU Classic. They continue this Saturday at the Classic with a single-game contest against #20 Freed-Hardeman.
A new era of Brescia women's basketball has arrived on campus this year as these ladies set to change the culture under new head coach, Brandon Fisher. After an impressive 66-point win against Kuyper College, the Bearcats looked to continue the intensity going into the classic. Senior, Lindsey Peyton, lead the scoring in the game against Kuyper with 16 points and eight rebounds as Madelyn Lyon (12 pts, 7 rebs), Jaylee Covington (11 pts), and Elise Williams (10 pts, 4 rebs) also helped the Bearcats to victory.
Raquel Crooke-Losada would get the scoring started for the Bearcats against Cumberland as she would make a layup in the paint on the assist from Lindsey Peyton. CU would finally break the scoreless drought as they tie up the game, 2-2, on a layup. Each team would go shot-for-shot in the first quarter until a three-pointer by Crooke-Losada and a layup by Peyton would secure a six-point lead for BU at the end of the first 10-minutes. The scoring roles would reverse in the second quarter as the Phoenix would start with a three-pointer to get them within three of the lead. Scoring struggles continued for both teams as neither could get a shot to fall in the net. Lindsey Peyton would end that drought with a jump shot in the paint on a turnover.
Peyton would hit the next shot for the Bearcats as a wide open three-pointer would give BU a seven-point lead. The Phoenix would close the gap to end the first half on a layup to make the score 22-21, Brescia lead. The Bearcats would continue to pull away late in the third with their biggest lead reaching ten-points. BU would close out the game with a 13-point fourth quarter to take the game, 54-46.
Lindsey Peyton led the Bearcats in points with 19 as she went 8-16 in the field with a three-pointer and six rebounds. Raquel Crooke-Losada followed closely behind with 15 points and a career high 10 rebounds on 6-15 shooting wit three, three-pointers. Madelyn Lyon added 10 points and nine rebounds of her own while Malyea Partinger also tabbed 10 points.
