LOUISVILLE, KY – The Brescia University women's basketball team pulled out a close win against Simmons on the road with a final score of 66-61. The Lady Bearcats extend their record to 3-1 overall which is the programs' best start since the 2012-13 season.
Despite losses in the last three meetings with the Falcons, the Bearcats looked to flip the script this year. Lindsey Peyton continues her hot streak on the court as she gets the Bearcats on the board first with a layup in the post. The Falcons' leading scorer would hold tight to her name as she nets a ball beyond the arc to take the lead for Simmons. A foul by Simmons would put Kennedy Johnson-Corley on the line for two made free throws and the lead by one. Raquel Crooke-Losada would push through a screen for the backdoor cut as she banks the ball off the glass for her first points of the game. With the 6-3 advantage, both the Bearcats and the Falcons would go on a two-minute scoring drought. Free-throws by Genesis Ghide-Bryan would break that drought for the Bearcats as they looked to push the ball more into the paint. A made layup by senior, Madelyn Lyon, would push the Bearcat lead to five at the end of the first quarter buzzer.
The Falcons would make a close comeback in the second quarter as they dropped the Bearcat lead to three on a layup. Back-to-back shots by Crooke-Losada and Paige Vanzant would quickly disintegrate the progress the Falcons made as BU continues to hit shots. Half time would rejuvenate the Bearcats as they push to bolster their seven-point lead. Lindsey Peyton would do just that as a layup past defenders would extend the lead to nine. Elise Williams would single-handedly score the next five for the Bearcats to give BU their biggest lead of the night of 12 points. The Bearcats were leading by 16 points going into the fourth quarter as they held a commanding lead over the Falcons. Despite the efforted comeback by Simmons, the Bearcats would grab their first win against the Falcons, 66-61.
Lindsey Peyton continues to lead her team in scoring with 18 points, four rebounds, and four steals on the night as Raquel Crooke-Losada followed behind with 11 points of her own with five rebounds and three assists. Kennedy Johnson-Corley and Genesis Ghide-Bryan each tabbed seven points and combined for nine rebounds in the win.
The Lady Bearcats head to Campbellsville, KY this Saturday to take on #1 Campbellsville with a tip off time of 2pm CT.
