Women's Volleyball Falls 0-2 in RSC Opening Week

OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Brescia University women's volleyball team opened conference play this week against St. Mary of the Woods and #18 IU Kokomo. The Bearcats went 0-2 on the week falling in three sets in both contests.

Match 1: St. Mary of the Woods 3 Bearcats 0

The Pomeroys ran out to an early 9-2 lead and continued to hold the lead for majority of set one. BU struggled offensively totaling just four kills in set one. SMWC continued to dominate taking set two 25-14 to take a two-game advantage. The Brescia offense started to build some momentum with back-to-back kills to force the Pomeroys into a timeout. SMWC strung some kills together to regain the lead. The Bearcats got within two of the lead but ultimately fizzled out as the Pomeroys took the match.

Francisca Sousa led the Bearcats with eight kills while Cheaney Archer added 14 assists.

Match 2: #18 IU Kokomo 3 Bearcats 0

After falling to the Pomeroys, the Bearcats faced the reigning RSC Champions in #18 IU Kokomo. The Bearcats battled hard through the first two sets dropping set one 25-18 and set two 25-20. With a lot of attack attempts, the Bearcats struggled to put the ball down past the Cougar's defense. The IUK offense was overwhelming as the Cougars hit .289 for the match as they took the match in three sets.

Callie Mason and Francisca Sousa each had six kills while Cheaney Archer added 16 assists. Campbell McBride had 12 digs in the match.

The Bearcats will head to McKenzie, TN to take on Bethel on Monday, Sep. 15, at 6pm.
