MCKENZIE, Tn. – The Brescia University women's volleyball team traveled to Bethel this past Monday night for some early week, non-conference action. The Bearcats fell in a five-set battle to the Wildcats to extend their record to 5-10 on the season.
BU and Bethel each competed side-by-side in set one until a slew of attack errors by the Wildcats gave Brescia a four-point advantage. Two consecutive kills by sophomore, Callie Mason, ensured that Bethel never surmounted the lead as the Bearcats win set one. The Bearcats struggled with attacking errors of their own as Bethel evened up the set score with a 25-18 win in set two. Guaranteed that the match goes to four sets, set three was detrimental to both teams and it showed. After a 16-8 deficit, the Bearcats battled back as they pursued Bethel's lead. BU did just that as a 6-1 run moved them closer to the lead. However, the Wildcats ended BU's momentum as they won set three 27-25. The Bearcats would take set four 25-12 to send this match into a deciding set five.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats took set five 15-11 to hand the Bearcats a loss on the road.
Three Bearcat hitters had double digit kills in the match: Callie Mason (14), Francisca Sousa (11), and Kendyn Syfert (10). Cheaney Archer assisted on 36 of those kills while also grabbing 27 digs. Campbell McBride led with 27 digs along with two assists. The Bearcats totaled a whopping 32 block assists on the night as Jennifer Lee led the pack with two solos and nine assists.
The Bearcats will head to New Albany, IN to take on IU Southeast in a conference matchup Friday, Sep. 19, at 6pm.
